Philippa Stanton Artist Biography


Philippa Stanton is synaesthetic. She studied History of Design at Manchester Polytechnic and 3 years of acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her synaesthesia takes the form of seeing the shapes, textures and colours of sound, smell, touch and taste.

In 2005, she was the first artist to exhibit a body of work at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, working as Artist in Residence there, focusing on voice portraits of the actors, and sounds specific to the theatre. In 2007 Philippa successfully exhibited her PerSona exhibition at The Theatre Royal in Brighton, which featured her voice portraits of personalities and celebrities, with accompanying photographic portraits by Cambridge Jones. She has also exhibited at UCL,London, backed by the Synesthesia Society, Terre a Terre, Brighton The Orange Tree, Richmond, arie Gott’s Townhouse, Bath, La Portes in Lewes, and recently North Village, in Brighton. She has also worked with Chichester Festival Theatre both in this country and Canada documenting the actor’s voices, and she will be exhibiting some of her new work in the Brighton Festival Open Houses 2009.

Philippa has also recently appeared on BBC children’s art programme smArt, Radio 4’s iPM with Eddie Maier, and will be seen on BBC’s The One Show, being interviewed by Michael Mosely later in the year.
